VivaScoop - August 2024

The VivaScoop header

Welcome to VivaScoop, your monthly rundown on everything Vivacity Technologies.

I hope you all had a wonderful labor day weekend and its great to be enjoying the last few weeks of summer with some beautiful weather to boot. Also, kids are back to school this week, so there's a collective sigh of relief across the Northern Hemisphere.

For the month of August, Vivacity continues to be involved in some wonderful projects, including the City of Kelowna Facilities Technology Assessment highlighted below. We've also been nominated for some local awards, which is hugely meaningful for us. See voting details below !!

Looking forward, on September 6th Vivacity celebrates its 3rd birthday . I'm immensely proud of the team and how far we've come as an organization, which is why next month there's no VivaScoop, but instead a reflection of the last year. Stay tuned for this update.

In the meantime, herewith VivaScoop August.

Project Update: City of Kelowna Facilities Technology Assessment

Vivacity hit the halfway point in our Facilities Technology Assessment with the City of Kelowna in August. This project aims to identify gaps in the City’s municipal building control infrastructure and provide technology and vendor recommendations that lead to sustainable improvements throughout their automation systems.

So far, we’ve captured the current state of operations through extensive stakeholder research with Kelowna and have defined a target state to work towards. To reach this state, we’ll iterate together on a facilities technology roadmap that prioritizes each recommendation based on their goals. Of note, our regular bi-weekly check-ins with the City make space for conversations about challenges and new findings during this process and keep the project focused. The bi-weekly check-ins have been a cornerstone for all our projects to date and in our eyes are critical to delivering effective projects.

Thanks to all of the dedicated staff running Kelowna’s city facilities, we’ve learned so much about the nuances of automation technology at scale and the benefits it can bring. And we’re excited to empower the Kelowna team to get the most out of their automation systems in the near future!

Co-op Update: Behind some of Vivacity’s newest designs!

Vivacity is pleased to announce that Kobe Shimoyama, our Brand and Marketing Designer, will be extending his Co-op work term for another four months! Kobe has helped the team with a variety of projects ranging from IT consulting reports to presentations and media. His most notable contributions include an overhaul of our VivaCitadel landing page, some brand-new collateral for our upcoming MISA BC conference, and ongoing assistance with our Kelowna Facilities Assessment team. We asked him about his thoughts on the term ahead:

“I’m super excited to be working at Vivacity for another semester, especially now that I’ve been acquainted with the team and can see opportunities for new projects and tools I’ll be involved with in the near future. This role has really expanded my business knowledge and given me a better perspective on the purpose marketing serves in helping clients understand what we do. Being able to learn how to build and maintain a live company website at the same time makes me feel like I’m putting my computing knowledge to use as well. I also can’t wait to spend more time with such a talented and supportive team; it’s been a blast hanging out with them and sharing stories while collaborating on real, meaningful projects in my community.”

We look forward to involving Kobe in some new and exciting work throughout the rest of the year. Keep it up Kobe!

Flipping the Quarterly Employee Review on its Head: The Stay Interview

- by Premie Naicker, Director People and Projects

In the fast-paced world of business, retaining top talent is crucial. At Vivacity, we believe that understanding our team members' needs, aspirations, and concerns is essential to creating a thriving and motivated workforce. This is why we've flipped the traditional quarterly employee review on its head and embraced the concept of the "Stay Interview": a proactive conversation between a manager and an employee designed to uncover what keeps the employee engaged and what might be pushing them toward considering other opportunities. Unlike exit interviews, which occur when it's too late to make a difference, Stay Interviews are about gathering insights while there's still time to act. They offer a range of benefits, including:

  • Improved retention: Through regular check-ins with employees, organizations can understand what motivates them and what challenges they face while moving proactively to keep them invested in their roles.

  • Enhanced employee engagement: With a platform to voice their opinions, share their goals, and discuss their experiences, employees can feel heard and develop a deeper connection with their organization and its mission.

  • Tailored development: Managers can identify specific training and development needs for each team member, allowing for personalized growth plans that align with both the employee’s aspirations and the organization’s goals.

  • Strengthened relationships: With a space for open and honest conversations, employees and management can build trust and bridge any gaps in communication and expectations.

  • Organizational insight: Feedback on organizational culture, leadership effectiveness, and operational challenges can guide strategic decisions and help shape a more positive work environment.

In a world where talent is the key to success, Stay Interviews are our way of ensuring that Vivacity is not just a workplace but a community where people feel

empowered to achieve their best.
